What is EDC? A beginner's guide for Bangladesh

Everyday carry, usually shortened to EDC, is simply the small set of things you carry every day because you use them: keys, a wallet, a light, sometimes a small tool. Nothing about it requires a hobby or a budget. It only means choosing those few things deliberately instead of by accident.

Why it matters more here

In Dhaka you spend a lot of the day away from a desk: on the road, in a market, in a building whose stairwell light has failed. A torch you can reach in two seconds, keys that do not shred your pocket, and cards that do not slide out of a folded wallet are small comforts that repeat every single day.

Load-shedding is the clearest example. A phone torch works, and it also drains the battery you may need later. A small dedicated light does not.

Start with four things

You do not need a kit. You need four decisions, made once:

A light you will actually carry. The best torch is the one in your pocket, not the brightest one at home. Keyring size is enough for stairwells and cable work.
Keys that stay quiet. Loose keys tear pockets and jingle. A key organiser holds them flat, like a folding knife holds its blade.
A wallet that fits how you pay. Most payments here are bKash or cash, so a slim card-and-notes carrier beats a thick fold.
A pouch, once you have more than three things. This is the step people skip. Without it, everything lives loose in a bag and you search for it.

Four mistakes worth avoiding

Buying for the biggest number. A torch advertised at a huge lumen figure is usually quoting a burst it holds for seconds. Runtime at a usable brightness is what you feel.
Buying more than you will carry. A multi-tool that stays in a drawer is not EDC; it is a drawer tool.
Ignoring the charging port. If a light takes a cable you do not already own, it will sit flat.
Paying before you look. With cash on delivery you can open the parcel in front of the courier and check it. Do that every time, including with us.

Everyday carry, সংক্ষেপে EDC, মানে সেই ছোট জিনিসগুলো যা আপনি প্রতিদিন সাথে রাখেন কারণ সেগুলো কাজে লাগে: চাবি, মানিব্যাগ, একটা লাইট, কখনো ছোট একটা টুল। এর জন্য আলাদা শখ বা বড় বাজেট লাগে না। শুধু এই কয়েকটা জিনিস ভেবেচিন্তে বেছে নেওয়া, এলোমেলোভাবে জমে যাওয়া নয়।

আমাদের এখানে কেন বেশি দরকার

ঢাকায় দিনের অনেকটা সময় কাটে ডেস্কের বাইরে: রাস্তায়, বাজারে, এমন কোনো বিল্ডিংয়ে যার সিঁড়ির বাতি নষ্ট। দুই সেকেন্ডে হাতে আসে এমন একটা টর্চ, পকেট না ছেঁড়া চাবি, আর ভাঁজ করা মানিব্যাগ থেকে কার্ড পড়ে না যাওয়া, এই ছোট সুবিধাগুলো প্রতিদিন কাজে লাগে।

লোডশেডিং সবচেয়ে সহজ উদাহরণ। ফোনের টর্চ দিয়ে কাজ চলে, কিন্তু তাতে সেই ব্যাটারিই শেষ হয় যা পরে দরকার হতে পারে। ছোট একটা আলাদা লাইটে সেই সমস্যা নেই।

শুরু করুন চারটা জিনিস দিয়ে

পুরো কিট লাগবে না। একবার চারটা সিদ্ধান্ত নিলেই হয়:

এমন লাইট যা সত্যিই সাথে রাখবেন। সবচেয়ে ভালো টর্চ সেটাই যেটা পকেটে আছে, ঘরে রাখা সবচেয়ে উজ্জ্বলটা নয়। সিঁড়ি বা তারের কাজে কি-রিং সাইজই যথেষ্ট।
চাবি যেন চুপচাপ থাকে। আলগা চাবি পকেট ছেঁড়ে আর শব্দ করে। Key organizer চাবিগুলো সমতল করে ধরে রাখে, ভাঁজ করা ছুরি যেমন তার ফলা ধরে রাখে।
যেভাবে টাকা দেন, সেই অনুযায়ী মানিব্যাগ। এখানে বেশিরভাগ লেনদেন bKash বা নগদ টাকায়, তাই মোটা ভাঁজের চেয়ে পাতলা কার্ড-ও-নোট ক্যারিয়ার ভালো।
তিনটার বেশি জিনিস হলে একটা পাউচ। এই ধাপটাই মানুষ বাদ দেয়। ফলে সব ব্যাগের ভেতরে ছড়িয়ে থাকে আর দরকারের সময় খুঁজতে হয়।

প্রথম কিটে কেমন খরচ

দাম বদলায়, তাই আসল দাম নিচের পণ্যের পেজে দেখুন। ধারণা হিসেবে: ছোট একটা টর্চ, একটা key organizer আর একটা পাতলা মানিব্যাগ মিলিয়ে কয়েক হাজার টাকার মধ্যে হয়ে যায়। ২,০০০ টাকার উপরে ডেলিভারি ফ্রি, আর এরকম একটা সেট সাধারণত ওই অঙ্কের কাছাকাছিই পড়ে।

যে চারটা ভুল এড়ানো ভালো

সবচেয়ে বড় সংখ্যা দেখে কেনা। বিশাল lumen লেখা টর্চ সাধারণত এমন একটা ঝলক বোঝায় যা কয়েক সেকেন্ড থাকে। বাস্তবে যেটা টের পাবেন সেটা হলো কাজে লাগার মতো উজ্জ্বলতায় কতক্ষণ চলে।
যা বইবেন না তা কেনা। ড্রয়ারে পড়ে থাকা multi-tool আসলে EDC না, ড্রয়ারের টুল।
চার্জিং পোর্ট খেয়াল না করা। যে লাইটের জন্য নতুন ক্যাবল লাগে, সেটা চার্জ ছাড়াই পড়ে থাকে।
